Adrian Newey, the renowned Formula 1 designer, has provided new insights regarding his departure from Red Bull Racing and his plans for the future. The decision marks a significant shift in his career after decades of success in the sport.

The Red Bull Chief Technical Officer has confirmed his departure from the Austrian team at the conclusion of Q1 2025. Newey, a pivotal figure in the sport known for his revolutionary aerodynamic concepts, cited the exhaustive demands of Formula 1 and a yearning for a break as primary reasons for his decision.

Newey’s career with Red Bull has been characterized by intense seasons, particularly highlighted by the 2021 championship battle against Mercedes. This period not only demanded relentless work but also saw the inception of the RB18, a car that set the foundation for this generation’s Formula 1 vehicles. Speaking about his upcoming departure to Sky Sports F1 during the Miami Grand Prix weekend, Newey remarked:

“F1 is all consuming. I’ve been at it for a long time now. 2021 was a really busy year because of the tight battle with Mercedes, through the championship and at the same time, putting all the research into the RB18 [the 2022 car].

“There comes a point where I just felt, as Forrest Gump said, ‘I’m feeling a little bit tired.'”

As Newey plans his exit from F1, he looks forward to embracing a more relaxed lifestyle. He has expressed desires to travel, possibly exploring France in a motorhome alongside his wife, Amanda, and dogs. He explained:

“I guess over the winter a little bit [I was considering leaving] and then as events have unfolded this year I thought I’m in a very lucky position where I don’t need to work to live, I work because I enjoy it and I just felt that now is a good time to step back and take a bit of a break and take stock of life.

“Go travelling a bit. I think my wife and the dogs will probably go travelling. Get a motorhome or something and go through France and just enjoy life. And then maybe at some point, I don’t know when, I’ll be standing in the shower and go ‘right, this is the next adventure’.”

Although Newey points to taking a break from the sport, rumors continue to spread of a move to Ferrari, Aston Martin, or Williams for the regulation change in 2026.

Lewis Hamilton, who is set to move to Ferrari at the end of the year, commented on the potential impact Newey could have at Ferrari during the Miami GP Drivers’ Press Conference. He lauded Newey’s unparalleled track record and expressed excitement about the possibility of working together.

“Adrian’s got such a great history, track record, and he’s just done an amazing job throughout his career in engaging with teams and the knowledge that he has.

“I think he would be an amazing addition.

“I think they’ve got a great team, they’re already making huge progress and strides forward – their car is quicker this year – but it would be a privilege to work with him.”

Although no confirmed discussions have been publicly acknowledged by Ferrari regarding Newey’s recruitment, Hamilton’s comments highlight the potential boost Newey’s expertise could bring to any team, especially one as storied as Ferrari.
